Memorial Weekend has come and gone. Did you get the grill or smoker fired up? The Slowpaddle boys got together Friday and brewed two variations of a fuq-boiz Hazy IPA at the Slowpaddle East location. Tim fired up the Camp Chef pellet grill (Memorial Day Special $200 of the Woodwind), making some more of his sausage burnt-ends. Inspired by all the hot dog burnt-ends we’re seeing all over social media, Tim used some of the sausage we made back in December (see article) to create his own better-tastier version. Apparently “burnt-ends” means add brown sugar and sauce. Tim said his secret is replacing the butter, called for in the hot dog recipe, with grease from cooking the sausage. Crafty, and damn they’re good! He also grilled up some wings with Meat Church's Gospel BBQ Rub and our Smoke Shack’s King of the Wing championship belt winning wing sauce (see article). Speaking of Smoke Shack, Big L swung by with some of his Smoke Shack cheese and meats, outstanding as always. With the meats and cheeses covered, I cooked up some pierogis with green and red bell pepper and onions on the Camp Chef side-kick griddle—I really love that feature! I buttered the griddle, threw the veggies on, then added a family sized bag of Mrs. T’s pierogies... then more butter and a generous sprinkle of the Meat Church rub. Outstanding! Get Your Sriracha Now – If You CanHere's a story for the Hot Sauce Sensei There is a huge shortage of the cock-labeled Huy Fong Sriracha sauce! Seems draught in Mexico has stymied the crops of the red-jalapeno hybrid pepper used as the base of the recipe. This is not the first time we’ve been deprived of our spicey condiment. In 2020, a similar, though less severe, poor yielding crop created a shortage, but everything was in short supply at the time so you may have not even noticed. Up until 2017, Huy Fong sourced it’s supply from a family farm in California. After committing fraud and ponying up $23 million to the family farm, the company was forced to find other sources. Now they got none…. Maybe a karma impact? Global Warming/Climate Crisis? I don’t know the reasons why, I just know it’s getting harder to find some cock sauce. The shelves on Amazon are bare! Troegs on the Trail for a CauseHave you been to the Troegs Brewery in Hershey PA? Troegs started out in Harrisburg, and the move to Hershey was an instant facilities upgrade. But they continue to add more and more and more! It’s really impressive to see. They have a huge tasting room that is perpetually full (see what I did there?), an outdoor patio, a beer garden, a self-guided tour (that leads you straight into the merch store) and a highly rated guided tour experience. They even have one of those penny smashing machines the kids love! The snack bar menu is highly eclectic with dishes such as Fois Grois Royal, Spicy Shrimp Ceviche, Rack of Lamb, Duck Confit, and Smoked Trout. You have to try the rosemary popcorn! The wife and I shared the more down to earth smoked brisket sammy and ham and cheese croissant—both excellent. A visit to the source of the brew may yield you a few brewery-only or limited release finds such as they’re Scratch series of experimental beers. It’s a good time with great food and beer and family accessible. Another limited release is the new Trail Day hoppy pilsner, with a portion of the proceeds going towards protecting Pennsylvania’s Kittatinny Ridge. June 2nd is National Trails Day, and Troegs is teaming up with The Nature Conservancy for an event in their Beer Garden. I tested a Trail Day on our visit and really enjoyed it! I was fearing a cold-IPA type experience (I just haven’t found one I’ve liked yet), but it was a perfectly brewed beer that tasted exactly as you would want a hoppy pilsner to taste like. Well done Troegners! Coffee in Opera?– That Immoral Beverage, Who Can Blame the Daughters?Oh dread the illicit activities such as have been inspired by that demon drink we call coffee! Of those sins we do not speak, purity and chastity have been stripped away by the intoxicating allure of the villainous brown bean in it’s dens of deceit. The aroma, the warmth, the …. wait? What? Coffee? Yup, at one time there was great concern about the immoral impacts of java and the shady shenanigans going down at the coffee houses across Europe. So much so that, one of the greatest and most famous composers of all time, Johanne Sebastian Bach himself, wrote a satirical opera on the subject titled “Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht – Kaffeekantate” a.k.a. the Coffee Cantata! “Who can blame the daughters?” English Translation below.
